VOLUNTEER PROFILE

By: Chelsey Lisiewski

Rewarding. I came to find out the accurate meaning of that word when I had the good fortune to con-nect with the Friends group at PETCO six years ago. I walked into the pet store ex-pecting nothing but to look at fish with my father.

Luckily, I spotted some cages with cats in them, and I told my father I was going to go and look at them. There was a large crowd of people crammed around the kittens, but I was able to squeeze through.

The woman behind the table began talking to me, and I learned that she was the president of the feline rescue group. I asked with no real hope, if there was anything I could do to help her. All I expected her to say was, sorry you're too young, you have to be 18, as all the others had done. I've wanted to work with animals since the age of two when I declared that I wanted to be a "veginarian", also known as a veterinarian! To my great surprise and pleasure however, they took me on as a volunteer with open arms, and I have been working with them for the past six years without a single regret.

P.S. We at Friends are glad she asked!!

ESTATE PLANNING

If Anything Happened to you,

500,000 companion animals are relinquished and euthanized in shelters each year simply because their owners died or became too ill to care for them.* Make sure that you have a plan in place to guarantee the lifetime care for your pets.

Comprehensive information on estate planning for animals can be found at www.estateplanningforpets.org The free site, set up by Steven Baker, a trusts and estates lawyer in Scottsdale, AZ., offers a wide range of information, including a list of knowledgeable lawyers in the U.S. and a pet-care cost estimator. Mr. Baker says "crucial questions to address are who will take care of the pets when you cannot; how much money should you leave for the pets care; and what strings, if any, do you want to attach to those funds." Other sources for information on pet estate planning include www.2ndchance4pets.org and a free kit from the Humane Society of the US Kit or call 202-452-1100
